1. Identify the lid type
First, determine whether it's a screw cap (twist-open), a pry cap (metal seal), or a plastic snap cap (with a snap).
2. General can opening tips
Wear non-slip gloves (rubber gloves are best) to increase friction and prevent paint from getting on your hands.
Soak the lid in hot water: Turn the paint can upside down and partially immerse the lid in hot water for about 3-5 minutes. This will allow the dried paint to expand and contract, softening it before attempting to open it.
Use tools:
Screwdriver/can opener: Gently pry along the edge of the lid until you hear a "pop" (air entering).
Tap with a rubber mallet: Tap around the edge of the lid to loosen the sealing tape.
Paint pliers: Purchase a "can opener" online. These are designed specifically for metal lids and are gentle on your hands.
